What do boards do?
Boards do governance. Governance is the big-picture leadership of an organisation. It’s about setting direction, making sure the organisation is doing what it says it will do, and looking after its long-term wellbeing.
Boards don’t run the day-to-day work – they guide the strategy, finances, risks, people and purpose.
Why do boards need volunteers?
Charities and not-for-profits rely on volunteers not just for hands-on mahi, but also for governance – the group of people who keep the organisation strong, safe, and focused. It takes a special person to give up their time to do this.
Without volunteer board members, many for-purpose organisations wouldn’t exist.
What skills are needed?
You might be more ready than you think. Boards need a mix of people:
- Strategic thinkers 📈
- Finance or legal minds 💼
- HR, health & safety, or leadership experience 👥
- People with lived experience 🫶
- People who know their communities 🗣️
- People passionate about the kaupapa ❤️
You don’t have to know everything – your perspective, energy or skills might be just what a board needs.
What’s in it for you?
Being a board member is also an amazing experience for you. Here are just a few of the benefits:
