Local Heroes, Global Celebration: IVY 2026 Kicks Off

Aotearoa is world-famous for its generosity of spirit, with Kiwis contributing around 159 million hours of formal volunteer labour every year. That’s hundreds of thousands of hands and hearts in schools, marae, charities, and countless community initiatives, all helping our communities thrive.

This year, the world is joining us in saying “thank you.” In December 2023, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2026 the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), marking 25 years since its last celebration and the beginning of Volunteering New Zealand’s journey. Here in Aotearoa, volunteers and volunteer managers have contributed to the Global Call to Action for the Future of Volunteering, helping shape how we celebrate, support, and protect volunteering now and into the future.

Across the Western Bay in 2025, Volunteering Services connected 1,137 people with volunteer opportunities, supported 136 community groups, and promoted 44 volunteering events, giving locals an opportunity to channel their skills and dedicate their time to impactful projects across the region.

“Volunteers are absolutely amazing,” Angela Wallace, Volunteering Services Manager shares.

“We’ve seen their impact right across the Western Bay of Plenty, especially in times of need, like the Mauao and Welcome Bay landslides, where people stepped up to support their communities. They have also helped at He Maimai Aroha Community Care Centre, creating a supportive, welcoming environment for people to come together”.

IVY 2026 is also about action. The Global Call to Action highlights three ways we can make volunteering even more connected: recognising volunteers, supporting participation, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for everyone. By joining this movement locally, we can grow the positive impact of volunteering across Tauranga Moana and the Western Bay.

“International Volunteer Year is something that only comes every 25 years, making it an amazing opportunity to get involved. If you’re not sure about volunteering, just give it a go. It doesn’t have to be a big commitment, even a small amount of time can make a real difference, and most people find they fall in love with the impact they’re making.”

As International Volunteer Year unfolds, the message is simple. Volunteering strengthens communities, and this year is an invitation for everyone, no matter your background or experience, to join the movement.
