It started when two friends, Lucas and Nic, formed an idea in a suburban Brisbane garage. The vision was to become the world’s first mobile laundry dedicated to supporting those experiencing hardship and homelessness — all free of charge. While the service began with clean clothes and hot showers, it quickly became clear that genuine conversation and connection were just as essential. Over time, Orange Sky expanded, bringing the service to Aotearoa in October 2018.
Today, Orange Sky Aotearoa operates six service locations nationwide, with its newest site now open in Tauranga. The launch, held on June 15, marks a significant step for a city facing some of the country’s highest rates of housing deprivation. According to Tauranga City Council, approximately 4,300 people — almost 3% of the population — have experienced homelessness in some form.
Tauranga’s new permanent laundry pod sits just beside the Cliff Road Community Hall and runs in partnership with Under the Stars – Homeless in Tauranga. Aligning with their meal and shower offerings, Orange Sky Tauranga operates every Thursday from 11:30am to 1:30pm and Saturday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This offers a chance for those to do laundry, enjoy a hot shower, have a meal, and share meaningful kōrero – all in a single, supportive setting.
During the launch, Kat Doughty, Orange Sky’s Senior Impact Manager, described the initiative as “not just about laundry — it’s about providing warmth, dignity, and kōrero.” She went on to call the collaboration with Under the Stars “a partnership made in heaven.” Orange Sky is also set to launch a new service in Whakatāne this August, continuing to respond to the growing need for accessible support services across the Bay of Plenty.
To keep these vital services going, Orange Sky is calling for more volunteers, greater public awareness, and donations. To learn more or get involved, visit www.orangesky.org.nz or reach out to their social channels.
