Wise and Wonderful leader recognised for seven years of service
A Katikati volunteer who has helped create lasting friendships and social connections for local seniors has been recognised for her dedication to the community.
Jill Bentley received a Volunteer Star award from Volunteering Services following nominations from Jan De Faye of the Katikati Community Centre and Jean Smith of the Wise and Wonderful seniors programme.
In the nomination, Jan describes Jill as the “steady heartbeat” of the weekly group for the past seven years.
“What many don’t see are the countless hours she pours in behind the scenes – planning, organising, preparing and making sure every session runs smoothly,” Jan says.
Wise and Wonderful provides a weekly social gathering for people aged 65 and over, offering companionship, activities and support for seniors across the Katikati community.
Accepting the award, Jill was quick to share the recognition with fellow volunteers.
“It’s not all about me,” she says. “I’ve got Linda Groenewegen, who’s been with me for four years, and without Linda, I couldn’t do the job. We also have about nine volunteers who help us as well.”
Jill was one of four people who helped establish the programme seven years ago. What began as an idea for a monthly quiz afternoon soon evolved into a regular weekly gathering.
“I only wanted to do quizzes once a month,” Jill says. “But it turned into Wise and Wonderful.”
The group now attracts 35 to 45 people each week and has become an important social outlet for many participants.
“Our motto is fun, laughter, companionship and respect,” Jill says. “That’s what we live by.”
Fellow volunteer Linda says the programme offers much more than organised activities.
“It’s the feeling in the room, the buzz,” Linda says. “People have formed really strong friendships.”
Jan says Jill’s care extends beyond running weekly sessions.
“If someone who normally attends isn’t there, Jill will check in on them, especially those who live alone,” Jan says.
Jill says seeing people enjoy themselves is what keeps the team motivated.
“We do it because we love it,” she says. “It gives us warm fuzzies.”
